Product: Brochure on healthy living
Key Questions: How can we stay healthy? How can we help others stay healthy? What are the important ideas to communicate about being healthy?
Observable Student Behaviors: Students will create a trifold brochure that informs people about how to stay healthy. They will have complete sentences and illustrations to support their writing, and include at least three different ways people can stay healthy. The students can help create a rubric that shows what is expected for this project. (L.1.2, W.1.2)

Suggested Activities
  • After reading Germs, Germs, Germs students can research healthy hygiene and then write an informative essay on how they practice good hygiene. (W.1.2, R.I.1.1)
  • Have a guest speaker come in (maybe school nurse) to talk about staying healthy. Have students record their information on a graphic organizer. (W.1.7)
  • Shared reading: Feel free to use any of the Common Core books as shared reading books by putting them up on the Smartboard and reading them with your students. Make sure it’s reader-friendly enough for your students and that you can zoom in enough to where they can read it as well.
  • Watch this germ video about hand-washing. Have students write down one important thing to remember when hand-washing, paying close attention to the parts of their sentence.(W.1.2, RI.1.1)
  • Use the following lesson plan to describe a picture and describe key details.
  • Keeping Healthy Shared, Interactive or Independent (Informative/Explanatory) As a class discuss ways to stay healthy (ie. getting exercise, eating right, avoiding germs, getting enough sleep). Use resources to do some simple research on one of the topics. Use a story web and list the reasons why it is important. From the web create an informative essay about the reasons it is important. A class “healthy living” book could be created with students contributing the writing. (W.1.2)

Homework: Students can take the brochure they created home and read/explain it to someone. Parents can use the following rubric (or something similar) to record student observations.
